While some politicians assert that Denmark holds the title for the highest tax burden globally, economists suggest that this claim is shaped by specific accounting nuances. When these factors are accounted for, Denmark ranks fifth, rather than first.

During the course of the election campaign, an array of politicians have seized the opportunity to highlight what they deem Denmark’s unique tax situation.

“We are the world’s most heavily taxed country,” declared Jakob Ellemann-Jensen, leader of the Venstre party, during a recent debate among prime ministerial candidates on DR.
