REXEN (Michael Rexen) is a multifaceted Danish singer, composer, and performer whose diverse background includes roots in the vibrant culture of the United Arab Emirates. With a unique musical style that seamlessly blends Western and Middle Eastern philosophical traditions, REXEN stands out as a prominent figure in the Danish music scene. His latest work, ‘The Chauffeur’, hit the shelves on Friday under Stunt Records and is set to be followed by an exciting tour, including a stop at Hotel Cecil on February 7. Here’s a closer look at REXEN’s Copenhagen.
LoveCopenhagen: Where do you call home?
REX: Christiania.
LoveCopenhagen: What’s your favorite spot to unwind?
REX: I love strolling around the lake in Christiania. It’s a car-free zone filled with picturesque houses, lively birds, and a diverse mix of people.
LoveCopenhagen: Where do you enjoy your coffee?
REX: Månefiskeren is a hidden gem—it’s the only place in Copenhagen where I can still find a black coffee for just DKK 15. The atmosphere is warm, and everyone is eager to chat.
LoveCopenhagen: Any favorite dining spots?
REX: I love crossing the cycle bridge to reach Told Og Snaps. They serve exquisite Danish fare paired with horseradish schnapps, all delivered with outstanding service. It’s a delight to see staff who take pride in their work.
LoveCopenhagen: Where do you go to celebrate?
REX: During winter, the Jazz Club in Christiania is my go-to for live instrumental music. In the summer, La Banchina on Refshale Island is perfect for enjoying wine and the refreshing water.
LoveCopenhagen: What inspires your creativity?
REX: Ultimately, inspiration often springs from within. Sometimes, even the less beautiful aspects of life can incite a desire to create beauty. However, I always leave the SMK feeling invigorated!
LoveCopenhagen: What’s your favorite corner of Copenhagen?
REX: The narrow streets of Christianshavn never fail to remind me how fortunate I am to live in this city.
LoveCopenhagen: When did you last fall in love with the city?
REX: An evening bike ride this summer across Knippelsbro took my breath away. Looking to my right, I saw the Opera House and the shimmering water, and to my left, the Black Diamond gleaming in the light. I suppose I just have a deep affection for the water!
LoveCopenhagen: What’s your most cherished memory here?
REX: One of my favorites is cycling with my boyfriend from party to party on a summer night in my bike trailer. And playing a big concert in Kongens Have? That was truly magical.
LoveCopenhagen: What’s your top recommendation for experiencing Copenhagen?
REX: Start your day in Christiania, taking in the vibrant street art, then make your way to Christianshavn for a leisurely lunch at a café—savoring food and drinks throughout the day.
LoveCopenhagen: If you could add one thing to the city, what would it be?
REX: Fifteen years ago, life in Copenhagen was much more challenging. I recall being fined for swimming in the water at Bryggen, and the subway was non-existent. We’ve certainly made progress, yet the skyrocketing housing prices threaten to undermine our quality of life. We need regulations on rent increases to protect our community.
LoveCopenhagen: What’s the soundtrack to your city life?
REX: On a winter day, I’d suggest my new album, ‘The Chauffeur.’ For the summer, it’s Fela Kuti’s ‘Expensive Shit’!
