Here is Copenhagen’s first new church in 30 years
The construction of a new church in the Copenhagen district of Ørestad is expected to be completed next year.
On Wednesday, construction began on a new church in the Copenhagen district of Ørestad.
The urban development company By & Havn writes this on its website on Thursday.
According to the company, this will be the first newly built church in Copenhagen in the past 30 years.
Anne Skovbro, CEO of the company, calls it a big day for Ørestad.
“The fact that a new city district gets its own church says something about how far it has come in creating its own identity on an equal footing with other districts in Copenhagen,” she says.
“The church creates – whether we are aware of it or not – a cultural foundation in our lives and culture and plays an important role in a local community.”
The construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
Concerts, yoga, dance and lectures
Since the first local plan from 2006, it has been the plan that a church should be built in Ørestad.
That plan was finalized four years ago when City & Port sold a building site where it will be located to Ørestad Parish.
Once the church has been built, the plan is for it to be used for much more than weddings and baptism ceremonies.
It is also planned that there will be space for small concerts, yoga, dance and lectures.
Andreas Klein Eriksen, who is the parish council chairman in Ørestad Parish, tells By & Havn’s website that they want a church that is an active part of the district.
“And we will continue the Church in Ørestad’s fine traditions of many different kinds of church services and cultural events with music, creativity and great commitment to the district and all its residents.”
“We hope and believe that it will be an enrichment for all of Copenhagen, both spiritually, culturally and architecturally.”
Henning Larsen Architects was responsible for designing the church.
