1000-krone banknotes worth a quarter of a billion were handed in in June

At the beginning of June, the 1000-krone note became invalid. Since then, 256 million kroner worth of notes have been returned.

256 million kroner in obsolete 1000-kroner banknotes were handed in to the Nationalbank in June alone.

However, there are still expired 1000-krone banknotes worth 1.1 billion kroner in circulation in society after the banknote type became invalid at the end of May.

This was announced by the Nationalbank in a statement on Tuesday.

Overall, 95 percent of the 1000-krone banknotes have been handed in to the Nationalbank, it says.

May 31st was the last day that 1000-krone banknotes and banknotes from older series were valid as a means of payment.

The National Bank began recalling the banknotes in November 2023.

These were banknotes from the 1944, 1952, 1972 and 1997 series, as well as the 1000-krone banknote from the current 2009 series.

“If you did not manage to use your older banknotes or 1000-krone banknotes before May 31, you can still redeem the banknotes at Danmarks Nationalbank’s deposit points in Aarhus, Odense and Copenhagen,” says Danmarks Nationalbank’s Chief Cashier, Niels Kaas.

The deposit points will receive the banknotes until May 31, 2026.

Citizens, companies and foreigners can redeem the invalid banknotes by physically attending Danmarks Nationalbank’s three deposit points, which are operated together with the payment institution Forex.

A separate cash desk has been set up in three of Forex’s Danish stores where you can redeem banknotes that have become invalid as a means of payment, according to the Nationalbank’s website.
