34-year-old man arrested after chemicals found in Silkeborg
A man has been charged with attempting to manufacture explosives after chemicals were found in an apartment.
Central and West Jutland Police have arrested a 34-year-old man after finding chemicals in an apartment in Silkeborg.
The police announced this in a press release.
The man is charged with attempting to manufacture explosives.
The arrest was made after a police operation that began around 12:30 on Tuesday.
In this connection, the police have found chemical substances in an apartment in central Silkeborg. In the apartment, objects were also found that, according to the police, may strengthen the suspicion that explosives were manufactured in the apartment.
“In a situation like this, we take no chances, so we cordon off the area, and then a fairly extensive investigation begins in the area,” says Police Commissioner Stephan Weber from the local police in Silkeborg in the statement.
Part of the police investigation has also been about finding the 34-year-old man who lives in the apartment. The man was arrested in a forest area south of Silkeborg.
According to the Central and West Jutland Police, it is still unknown exactly which chemicals were found in the apartment. It is also unknown whether the man will be produced in a constitutional hearing, they say.
Previously, it was reported that the police were investigating a suspicious situation on Jernbanevej in Silkeborg. The police stated that munitions disposal personnel from the Danish Armed Forces assisted the police in the operation.
As a result of the police operation, part of Jernbanevej has been blocked. Jernbanevej runs along Silkeborg Station.
The Central and West Jutland Police state that the area will remain closed for an unknown number of hours.
The police stated earlier Tuesday that citizens could safely move outside the blockades.
Stephan Weber said Tuesday evening that at no time has the police assessed that there has been reason to be concerned or unsafe in the area.
Still, he says that it can ‘give food for thought’ when the police are present in large numbers with armed officers.
“We encourage citizens who may have experienced our presence as something violent and who may need to talk to someone about the incident to contact Victim Counseling,” he says in the press release.
