On December 24, the National Police reported 44 burglaries across the nation. While this figure marks a decline compared to previous years, the overall frequency of break-ins during the holiday season remains concerning, with an uptick noted throughout December.
The police’s recent tally, compiled shortly after midnight on Christmas Day, does not yet account for any incidents reported or registered thereafter. Nevertheless, the preliminary numbers show that burglaries on Christmas Eve were indeed fewer than in recent years—51 were reported last year, while the counts stood at 61 and 67 in the two prior years.
However, as the holiday season unfolded, a troubling trend emerged: the weeks leading up to Christmas saw a significant increase in burglary reports compared to previous years. The National Police’s review of holiday-related break-ins spans from December 12 through January 4. A comparison of data leading up to December 24 reveals a worrisome upward trajectory.
As of Christmas Eve, 729 burglaries had been reported in 2025. This is a stark rise from 659 in the same timeframe last year, 588 in 2023, and 530 in 2022. This equates to a staggering 37.6 percent increase over the past three years.
The National Police’s report focuses primarily on residential burglaries, but commercial properties have also fallen victim to break-ins during the holidays. Notably, a spate of thefts has targeted dental clinics in the southeast of the country.
Kasper Skotte, a duty chief from the South Zealand and Lolland-Falster Police, elaborated on this unusual trend, stating, “We have had four break-ins at dental practices in South Zealand and Lolland-Falster.” Local reports from Folketidende confirm that clinics in Nykøbing Falster, Maribo, and Vordingborg were among those hit.
In another district, certain residential areas have been particularly hard-hit. On Helmsman’s Wing and Sailor’s Wing in Hjerting near Esbjerg, eight burglaries have been documented, according to the South and Southern Jutland Police. Additionally, the East Jutland Police reported eight burglaries that have affected various locations beyond their district.
As the holiday season progresses, officials continue to monitor the situation closely, reminding residents to remain vigilant against potential threats.
