On Monday, the Social Democrats are set to convene an extraordinary delegate meeting in Copenhagen, where crucial decisions will shape the party’s future. At stake is the selection of their new mayor responsible for employment, integration, and business.

Five prominent members from Copenhagen’s Citizens’ Representation—Andreas Keil, Laura Rosenvinge, Mette Reissmann, Lars Aslan Rasmussen, and Yildiz Akdogan—are vying for this pivotal role. Political spokesperson Niels E. Bjerrum shared insights with Ritzau, underscoring the significance of this election.

The vacancy arose following the abrupt departure of Pernille Rosenkrantz-Theil, who, despite being newly elected, chose to exit the political arena shortly after the local elections on November 18.

In a surprising turn, Ulla Krag, also newly elected to the Citizens’ Representation, expressed her interest in the mayoral position but failed to secure a supporting circle, thus removing herself from contention.

Delegates at the meeting will cast their votes for one of the five candidates in the initial round. Should none secure more than 50 percent of the votes, a second round will unfold between the top two candidates, with the one receiving the majority declared the winner, as explained by Bjerrum.

The number of delegates is determined by the membership of the nine constituencies within Social Democracy in Copenhagen, with representation ranging from six to ten delegates depending on local membership.

Voting rights extend beyond just the candidates, including members of the Citizens’ Representation, as well as representatives from the DSU Copenhagen and Frit Forum, a student organization aligned with the Social Democrats.

Following the election on Tuesday, the party’s eight members of the Citizens’ Representation will gather to discuss the distribution of key roles such as political rapporteur, group chair, and various committee positions within the municipality.

Stay tuned as this critical meeting unfolds, promising to set the course for the party’s future leadership.
