On November 18, 2024, Danish lawmakers reached a remarkable consensus, pledging to plant one billion trees over the next 20 years and to transform 10% of the nation’s agricultural land into lush forests and natural habitats. This ambitious initiative aims to significantly reduce fertilizer usage across the country.
Describing this agreement as “the greatest change to the Danish landscape in over a century,” Jeppe Bruus, who leads the Danish Ministry for Environmental Affairs, highlighted that the transformation will mirror the profound alterations seen since the draining of wetlands in 1864. The deal emerged from collaborative discussions that began in June, uniting farmers, industry representatives, trade unions, and environmental advocates.
The financial commitment attached to this sweeping initiative amounts to 43 billion kroner (approximately 6.1 billion dollars), earmarked to acquire land from farmers over the next two decades. The plan envisions an expansion of Danish forests by 250,000 hectares, alongside the restoration of an additional 140,000 hectares of farmland currently deemed harmful to the climate, particularly those situated on low-lying, vulnerable soils.
Currently, forests cover 14.6% of Denmark’s land area. The agreement received backing from the country’s three-party coalition government, which includes the Social Democrats, the Liberals, and the moderate center, as well as support from the Socialist People’s Party, the Conservatives, the Liberal Alliance, and the Social Liberal Party. A parliamentary vote on this landmark agreement is expected to be a straightforward confirmation of the alliance’s shared vision.
In a separate but related move, the Danish government announced plans to tax livestock farmers from 2030 for the greenhouse gases emitted by their cows, sheep, and pigs. This groundbreaking decision positions Denmark as the first country to implement such a tax, seeking to address a significant source of methane emissions—a potent gas in the arena of global warming.
