A man hit a driver on the highway. His blood alcohol level was sky high. He was arrested and convicted the same day.

The blood alcohol level of an Eastern European man was not just above the limit for what was allowed in traffic when he hit another driver on Motorring 4 near Ishøj on Tuesday morning.

It was deadly high.

Copenhagen West Police announced on Wednesday that the man has been given an immediate sentence for driving with a blood alcohol level of 3.62.

It is prohibited to drive a car with an alcohol per mille of 0.5 or more, and when the per mille exceeds 2.0, the case is automatically assessed according to the more severe provisions of the Traffic Act.

According to the prosecution at the Copenhagen West Police, the man was sentenced to 30 days of suspended imprisonment for his offense. In addition, he was expelled from Denmark and is not allowed to enter the country for the next four years.

The court in Glostrup decided, in continuation of the verdict, that the man must be remanded in custody until he is sent out of the country.

According to Sundhed.dk, it is individual how a given alcohol level affects you. But a level above 3 can be fatal, and the Eastern European man was well above that limit.

It is difficult to convert a blood alcohol level to how many drinks a person has drunk. The blood alcohol level depends on factors such as the person’s size, whether the person has eaten, and the time period over which drinking has occurred.

According to Sundhed.dk, an adult male who quickly drinks five drinks on an empty stomach will typically achieve an alcohol level of 1.5.

If he eats and spends several hours at the same time, the blood alcohol level will be significantly lower and peak at approximately 0.75.

Although an alcohol per mille must be considered sky-high, it has previously been seen higher, even here in Denmark. Significantly higher, in fact.

In 2005, Ekstra Bladet reported on a Polish man who was admitted to a hospital in Aarhus, where his blood alcohol level was measured at 8.7.
