I’m a sucker for a good travel rewards card. Over the years, I’ve managed to collect a selection—not because I relish juggling annual fees but because the right cards can save you a significant amount on flights, hotels, and travel perks that would otherwise hit your pocket hard.
Alongside my personal cards, I also carry a couple for my business expenses. One that stands out particularly is the Capital One Venture X Business Credit Card, the crown jewel of Capital One’s offerings. This card not only boasts a generous welcome bonus but also grants access to over 1,300 airport lounges, provides annual travel credits, and features a straightforward 2x rewards system on all purchases—ensuring you’re steadily earning multiple miles for every dollar spent.
To help you determine if this card suits your needs, here’s a comprehensive review highlighting why I find it so appealing:
What is the Capital One Venture X Business Card?
The Capital One Venture X Business Credit Card is a premier travel rewards card issued by Capital One. With a $395 annual fee—significantly lower than many competing premium business cards—it presents an opportunity to gain far more value than what you invest. Here’s a quick rundown of its compelling perks:
- LIMITED-TIME OFFER: Earn up to 400,000 bonus miles; 200,000 miles for spending $30,000 in the first three months, and another 200,000 miles for spending $150,000 in the first six months.
- Unlimited 2 miles per $1 on all purchases, with no category restrictions.
- 5x miles on flights booked through Capital One Travel.
- 10x miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel.
- $300 annual travel credit (usable exclusively through Capital One Business Travel).
- Receive 10,000 bonus miles each year on your account anniversary.
- Access to over 1,300 airport lounges globally, including Capital One lounges and Priority Pass™ locations, post-enrollment.
- Up to $120 in statement credits for TSA Precheck or Global Entry.
- No foreign transaction fees.
Using Your Capital One Miles
Capital One miles can be redeemed in a variety of ways. One option is booking travel directly through Capital One’s exclusive portal. While I typically advise against booking through credit card portals, doing so allows you to fully leverage the Venture X’s travel credit, as well as enjoy the 5x and 10x miles offers.
Alternatively, if you’ve made a travel purchase within the last 90 days, you can reimburse yourself at a rate of one cent per mile. Post 90 days, you can still use miles as cash back—though at a less favorable rate of 0.5 cents per mile, which I would recommend avoiding if possible, as it’s not the best value.
You can also explore the Capital One Entertainment portal, where you can use your miles to book tickets for concerts, sports events, and more. Occasionally, Capital One rolls out exclusive cardholder events and presale opportunities. While redeeming miles for tickets nets you only about 0.8 cents per mile, it’s still a unique opportunity to make the most of your miles.
However, the true sweet spot for redeeming your miles lies in transferring them to one of Capital One’s 15+ airline and hotel partners. While the value of these redemptions varies, they typically provide much greater returns than the baseline one cent per mile. This process is user-friendly and can be managed easily through your Capital One account.
Here are some current travel partners you can utilize:
- Accor Live Limitless
- Aeromexico Club Premier
- Air Canada Aeroplan
- Air France/KLM Flying Blue
- And more…
Pros of the Venture X Business Card
As someone who frequently travels for work, I’m always on the lookout for ways to earn miles and ease the burdens of airport life. The straightforward 2x miles on all purchases is a highlight for me. While many cards offer higher rewards in specific categories like advertising or travel, there are few options for dining and everyday expenses where you can consistently earn more than 2x per dollar spent. Hence, I often turn to the Venture X for expenses where higher rewards aren’t available.
Let’s delve into some of the standout benefits:
$300 Travel Credit
Each year, you receive a $300 credit for bookings made through Capital One Business Travel (covering flights, hotels, or car rentals). If you’re already booking travel regularly, this credit essentially transforms into free money, effectively lowering your annual fee from $395 to just $95.
Lounge Access
Cardholders gain entry to both Capital One Lounges and Priority Pass lounges. Based on my experiences, Capital One’s lounges offer a spacious and modern atmosphere with quality food—though they’re limited geographically. Their expansion efforts are promising, and I believe they surpass many other bank-affiliated lounges in terms of quality. Priority Pass access further elevates your travel experience by granting you entry to over 1,300 lounges worldwide.
Anniversary Bonus
On your account anniversary, you’ll receive an additional 10,000 bonus miles—worth around $100 toward travel. It’s a thoughtful nod that helps amortize the annual fee even further.
Should You Get This Card?
The Capital One Venture X Business Credit Card is ideally suited for small to medium-sized business owners who frequently travel and can commit to spending at least $30,000 to meet the welcome offer requirements.
In my opinion, the Capital One Venture X Business card represents one of the best values among premium business cards available today. While it might lack some of the glitz or extensive benefits of options like The Business Platinum Card® from American Express or the Chase Sapphire Reserve for Business, its straightforward usability, lower annual fee, lounge access, and clear earning structure make it a compelling choice.
This card is a staple in my business toolkit, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to others.
