MANILA – As the Philippines and Denmark prepare to celebrate 80 years of diplomatic relations in 2026, both nations are setting their sights on strengthening their partnership across several vital sectors, particularly in maritime affairs.
At a recent ceremony aboard the BRP Miguel Malvar at the Naval Operating Base in Subic, Danish Ambassador to the Philippines, Franz-Michael Mellbin, announced the appointment of Denmark’s first maritime attaché in the Philippines, a move that underscores the commitment to bolster bilateral ties.
“Things are moving forward on various fronts,” Mellbin stated during the event. “By addressing economic, cultural, and security concerns, we can better serve our people and contribute to a more prosperous future.” His words resonated with the shared aspirations of both nations to foster welfare and increase job opportunities.
As a maritime nation, Denmark aligns closely with the Philippines’ dedication to promoting a “rules-based world order,” a principle Mellbin emphasized in his discourse.
Rear Admiral Juario Marayag, the commander of the Naval Sea Systems Command of the Philippine Navy, echoed this sentiment, expressing that Denmark represents a “natural partner” for the Philippines in its pursuit of advancements in maritime technology and capabilities. He described Denmark as a “benchmark” as the Philippine Navy seeks to modernize and enhance its forces.
Looking beyond maritime cooperation, Philippine Ambassador to Denmark, Pablito Mendoza, expressed Manila’s eagerness to explore innovative partnerships with the European nation. “Together, we will continue to build on our strong foundation, expand areas of cooperation, and deepen our commitment,” he affirmed.
Denmark was among the first countries to formally establish diplomatic relations with the Philippines in 1946, a significant milestone following the conclusion of World War II and the inception of the United Nations.
The Danish Embassy in Manila recently announced a series of events planned for 2026 to commemorate the 80th anniversary. These celebrations will encompass cultural exchanges, business promotion initiatives, and strategic dialogues between the two governments, reflecting a commitment to a vibrant and cooperative future.
