Professor not worried about new corona variant

Professor Jens Lundgren believes that the new corona variant does not pose a greater danger than previous variants.

There is no reason to worry about the new corona variant, which was first reported in Sweden on Saturday.

This is what professor of infectious disease medicine at the University of Copenhagen, Jens Lundgren, tells Ritzau.

“We certainly shouldn’t be worried about the new variant. It has happened quite a few times in the last five years that a new variant appears that has mutated.”

The new variant NB.1.8.1, nicknamed nimbus, has already spread to parts of Asia and has recently also been registered in the UK.

The new mutation of corona is very similar to the previous ones we have experienced before, says Jens Egelund.

“It has changed its genetic makeup, and in that way it looks a little different and has a slightly better ability to reproduce.”

However, Nimbus is not more dangerous than the previous variants, as it is still compatible with the corona vaccines, explains Jens Egelund.

“The vaccine works and our immunity also works against the new variant, so there will probably be a small jump in the number of infected people, then it will create a little illness, but it is nothing serious.”
