Rum balls recalled after mouse droppings found
During a food inspection on Friday, pests were found that may have contaminated chocolate in rum balls.
Truffle rum balls from Selected Gourmet Group are being recalled after mouse droppings were found on the company’s property.
Selected Gourmet Group writes this in a press release.
Specifically, this concerns truffle rum balls with a best before date from July 20 to August 27, 2025. Rum balls with other best before dates are not included in the recall.
The rum balls may have been in contact with mice, it is said.
A food inspection on Friday found spores of pests that may have contaminated the chocolate, writes Selected Gourmet Group.
The Danish Food Safety Authority advises consumers to return the rum balls to the store where they were purchased. Alternatively, they can be thrown away.
Selected Gourmet Group, which produces chocolate, expects to be ready with newly produced products ‘soon’.
The company has its address in Tølløse on Zealand.
Mice can carry bacteria
Mice can carry a number of diseases or bacteria, which can be transmitted to humans through the mice’s urine and feces, among other things.
This includes salmonella, which can be spread to humans from mice through infected food or drink or from inhaled dust. This is what the pest control company Anticimex writes on its website.
A salmonella infection can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.
Companies have a duty to protect themselves against pests that may affect food safety.
If pests do enter the business anyway, it is the business’s responsibility to control them.
If rodents such as mice or rats are found, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration recommends spreading flour or talcum powder and then keeping the premises completely quiet for up to 48 hours.
If it can be proven that rodents are no longer present, the business can reopen.
However, this requires that food that may have been in contact with the pests is removed and that the necessary cleaning is carried out.
