I recently found myself enchanted by the flavors of Denmark—at least those inspired by the Danish culinary tradition—during a delightful weekend in Solvang, a charming town steeped in rich European heritage. While I have yet to set foot in the actual land of the Vikings, my taste buds embarked on a thrilling journey.
After perusing a number of travel blogs, I settled on Solvang Restaurant for lunch. There, my family and I savored a medley of delights: a ham and Tilsit cheese sandwich, traditional Danish meatballs, and a savory sausage platter that transported me straight to the heart of Scandinavia.
For dinner, our next delectable stop was Bit O’Denmark, a venue lauded by countless reviews. We indulged in Flaeskesteg—roast pork stuffed with prunes—a dish that instantly piqued my curiosity, along with Frikadeller, or pan-fried Danish pork meatballs, both of which had been unknown to me until this culinary adventure. We also indulged in a classic Wienerschnitzel.
Each plate arrived rich with a generous helping of red cabbage and potatoes, all drenched in luxurious gravy. The meal at Bit O’Denmark was a standout, bursting with flavor. The mashed potatoes were a revelation, and the gravy was so exceptional, I found myself dreaming of it gracing my Thanksgiving table in the years to come.
