Traveler’s Journal Series Kicks Off This Thursday at Dungeness River Nature Center

SEQUIM — This spring, the Dungeness River Nature Center, located at 1943 W. Hendrickson Road in Sequim, will welcome a captivating lineup of presentations as part of the highly anticipated Traveler’s Journal series.
The Traveler’s Journal is not just an ordinary speaker series; it’s an adventure-driven program that plays a vital role in raising funds for projects along the Olympic Discovery Trail. The series of Thursday night presentations, starting this week and running through March 26, promises to ignite the wanderlust in all who attend.
With a suggested donation of $10 at the door, your contributions will directly support ongoing Olympic Discovery Trail projects, helping to enhance these beautiful outdoor spaces for all.
Doors will open at 6:30 PM, with presentations officially beginning at 7 PM. Here’s what you can look forward to:
Thursday, February 19: “Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska: Mountaineering, Rafting, and Sea Kayaking Over Five Decades”
Speaker: Henry Florschutz
A resident of Port Townsend since 2014, Florschutz’s fascination with travel began in his teenage years. After five decades exploring various corners of the globe, he continues to seek out new adventures.
February 26: “Drawn by Birds, Captivated by Cuba”
Speakers: Bob and Enid Phreaner
The Phreaners, who made Sequim their home in 2012, have transitioned from casual hiking enthusiasts during their working years to explorers of remote locales. They bring a wealth of experience to the Traveler’s Journal series, having previously shared their journeys with audiences.
March 5: “One Month in Africa, Top to Bottom”
Speakers: Steve and Mirja Wilson
Steve and Mirja Wilson, Sequim residents since 2008, are known for their volunteer work with Sequim Wheelers and their adventurous spirit. Whether biking through picturesque French countryside or enjoying a tranquil cruise, they meticulously plan their travels to ensure memorable experiences.
March 12: “Ten Weeks Traveling Light — Packing for the Long Haul in the Netherlands”
Speakers: Steve Durrant and Chris Carlson
Durrant leads the Puget Sound to Pacific Collaborative, an initiative focused on completing gaps in the Olympic Discovery Trail, while Carlson is a seasoned landscape architect and former National Park Service leader. Together, they’ve cycled extensively across the Pacific Northwest, Canada, and beyond, bringing insights from their journeys.
March 19: “Wildlife of the Scandinavian Arctic”
Speakers: Ken and Mary Campbell
This dynamic duo are lifelong wildlife and nature photographers, having dedicated over 45 years to exploring the globe for remarkable wildlife encounters. Their work has found its way into numerous publications, and they remain active volunteers for both the Feiro Marine Life Center and Olympic National Park.
March 26: “Tasmania”
Speaker: John Gussman
With a passion for photography that was sparked in a closet-turned-darkroom, Gussman has dedicated his career to capturing nature’s beauty. After moving to Washington in 1979, he transformed his backyard—Olympic National Park—into a canvas for his captivating photography.
As the Traveler’s Journal series unfolds, it promises not only to entertain but also to inspire deeper connections with the natural world. Be a part of this enriching experience!
