Sponsored Collaboration with Visit Sweden
Once again, we find ourselves drawn to the stunning landscapes of Sweden, this time venturing into the northeastern region of Skåne in partnership with Visit Sweden. Here, nestled against the borders of Småland, nature reigns supreme. With an abundance of forests, lakes, and wildlife, the area offers a tranquil escape for those seeking both activity and serenity in the great outdoors.
A Natural Retreat
Our adventure begins at Ivösjön, Scania’s largest lake, where we’ll spend our initial two nights. I eagerly anticipate canoeing and camping on a secluded island, a prospect that brings back fond memories of last year’s journey in Småland. The thought of waking up to the ethereal beauty of a misty morning once again fills me with excitement.
Our second night will find us at the enchanting Bäckaskog Castle, perched on the shores of the lake. As we move westward on the third night, we’ll pitch our tent near Finjasjön and explore the stunning Hovdala nature area, where our accommodations promise to exceed our expectations.
Enchanting Scania
One of the most delightful aspects of Scania is its proximity to Copenhagen, yet it feels like a world apart. The shift is palpable from the moment we cross the bridge; the air is alive with the calls of birds of prey. In Scania, glancing upward often reveals the graceful forms of red kites soaring overhead.
Canoeing at Ivösjön
As we arrive at Ivösjön, Skåne’s largest and deepest lake, our canoe adventure begins at Wetlandi canoe rental. After being equipped with life jackets, firewood, a water tank, mosquito repellent, and a shovel (the purpose of which will soon become clear), we’re ready to set off.
Though we’ve brought our own cooking gear, tent, and sleeping bags, Wetlandi offers a convenient option to rent camping equipment — aside from sleeping bags. We start our journey with a hearty lunch from the nearby Sotnosen Korvcafé, where traditional Swedish dishes are served with a refreshing simplicity, all crafted from local ingredients.
Finding Our Own Island
With our canoe loaded with gear, we embark on what feels like a modern-day Robinson Crusoe adventure. While there’s a hostel option further up the Holjeåen river, our aim is to find a secluded island to call our own for the night. Many islands feature designated camping spots, but as long as we adhere to some basic guidelines, we have the freedom to pitch our tent wherever we like.
As we search for our ideal island, I reminisce about past canoe trips in Denmark marred by large groups of campers encroaching on moments of solitude. This is another reason I cherish Sweden—it offers the space to truly connect with nature without the crowding often experienced elsewhere.
After a short paddle, we spot a promising island near Slättön. One small isle is home to a nesting osprey we intend to respect, but just adjacent is another island that appears perfect for our needs. It even boasts a natural “quay” for easy access.
Upon landing, we are greeted by the enchanting sight of a small clearing nestled among the trees—it’s the oasis I’ve been dreaming of!
Wilderness Camping: Embracing Nature’s Freedom
This marks my first experience with wild camping, and I already sense it won’t be my last. Sweden’s Allemansrätten grants us the right to pitch our tent almost anywhere in nature, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the stillness and beauty that surrounds us—without the distraction of other visitors.
However, this freedom comes with the absence of facilities; our little island lacks toilets and running water, so we must come prepared with ample supplies. Naturally, this means employing the shovel for those necessary moments of privacy, followed by covering up afterwards.
Our little island became our home for the night.

Gourmet Wilderness Dining
While our stay is rustic, it feels remarkably luxurious. The beauty of the surroundings is overwhelming as we sit on the shore, gazing out over the tranquil lake. Dinner from Sotnosen Korvcafé feels like a gourmet experience amidst the wilderness.
Before the sun dips below the horizon, we take a refreshing swim in the lake. Later, we boil water for tea, savoring the peacefulness beside the fire. Surprisingly, we find ourselves blissfully mosquito-free!
A Serene Morning on Our Island
At 5:00 AM, I awaken with an irresistible urge to paddle in the dawn light. Though not as spectacular as past sunrise experiences, the moment is undeniably beautiful. After a short return to sleep, we pack up our belongings and prepare to head back to Wetlandi.

Returning to Wetlandi
While countless opportunities for canoeing exist throughout Skåne and beyond, Ivösjön stands out as a destination that fulfills the dreams of many adventurers. The myriad of islands beckons exploration, whether for a short getaway or a longer expedition, with our little island being a mere few hours’ paddle from Wetlandi.

Luxurious Stay at Bäckaskog Castle
We could have canoed directly across Ivösjön to our next destination, but instead, we choose to drive around the lake to conserve energy. Our next stop is the exquisite Bäckaskog Castle, beautifully situated between Ivösjön and Opmannasjön.
We had planned to explore the nearby Cow Coal nature area, renowned for its dramatic boulders favored by climbers, but heavy rain and thunder lead us to discover the castle’s charming garden instead.
After a day of wilderness adventure, the comfort of a soft bed and a delicious meal is a welcome indulgence. Yet soon enough, we’ll find ourselves back in the embrace of nature, this time exploring the wonders of Hovdala nature area—more to come on that.
