Danish international defender Joachim Maehle of VfL Wolfsburg has been sidelined indefinitely following a serious shoulder injury sustained during a training session.
The 28-year-old full-back suffered the injury on Wednesday, prompting an immediate response from the Bundesliga club, which has now confirmed that Maehle will not return to play for the foreseeable future.
In a statement on the club’s website, Wolfsburg detailed the severity of the injury, noting that Maehle was taken by ambulance to a hospital shortly after the incident. Unfortunately, medical experts have classified it as a serious shoulder injury, although the club has refrained from providing a timeline for his recovery.
Maehle has been a consistent presence on the field for Wolfsburg this season, and he played a full 90 minutes in three out of four World Cup qualifiers for Denmark this autumn. The national team’s next challenges are set for mid-November, where they will face Belarus followed by Scotland.
However, the atmosphere at Wolfsburg is currently fraught with challenges. Under the stewardship of Danish sporting director Peter Christiansen, the team is experiencing a dismal stretch, having secured just one win in their last nine matches. Compounding their troubles, Wolfsburg was eliminated from the cup tournament on Tuesday after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Holstein-Kiel. The road ahead appears daunting both for the club and for Maehle as he embarks on a long recovery.
