SCOTLAND – DENMARK 4-2:
The recent match between Scotland and Denmark sent shockwaves through the Danish football community.
“Incredible Danish shock—it’s so crazy that it defies description,” remarked BT, capturing the collective disbelief. Meanwhile, Ekstra Bladet headlined, “Complete Danish humiliation,” summing up the mood following the game.
Needing only a single point to secure their place in the World Cup, the Danes now find themselves facing the prospect of playoffs to qualify for the championship.
In what seemed like a blink of an eye, Scott McTominay struck early, sending a cross from Ben Gannon-Doak into the net just four minutes into the match.
“Look at Scott McTominay! It’s one of the worst!” exclaimed TV2 commentator Robin Grov, as he allowed the replay to do the talking.
“This is one of the sickest goals. Look how high he gets that foot up. The Danes are stunned,” Grov added, a brief pause marking his disbelief.
After halftime, Rasmus Højlund managed to equalize with a penalty, but Denmark’s momentum shifted when Kristensen received a red card just five minutes later, leaving the visitors with ten men.

The dismissal provided a spark for the Scots, who pushed for the lead. They found the breakthrough with just 11 minutes remaining, when Shankland capitalized on a corner to make it 2-1.
However, the Danish joy was short-lived, as Dorgu quickly leveled the score just three minutes later.
In a thrilling climax, three minutes into extra time, Tierney became the unlikeliest of heroes, scoring the winning goal. Moments later, Kenny McLean sealed the deal, firing home from the midfield to finalize the score at 4-2.
Elleville reactions
McTominay’s remarkable goal quickly went viral. Former footballer Rio Ferdinand tweeted, “Jheeeeeeezeeeee.”
Meanwhile, Stan Collymore chimed in enthusiastically, “FOR A GOAL! MCSAUCE!” praising McTominay’s effort.

McTominay’s masterpiece didn’t just impress fans back home; it garnered attention across borders, with Jesper Mathisen proclaiming it a “work of art,” while Morten Langli noted, “Well, McTominay—learning in Naples pays off.”
Danish disappointment
On the other side of the field, Danish sentiments were far from positive. The shock defeat elicited frustration in the Danish press.
“Disastrous start. This was not how it was supposed to unfold. The Danes are completely shaken,” commented BT.
“An absolutely terrible start for Brian Riemer’s squad,” echoed Ekstra Bladet, while Berlingske emphasized, “What a goal by Scotland. Scott McTominay stepped up and made it count against Kasper Schmeichel. Unforgettable.”
However, it wasn’t a straightforward path for the Scots. Just 21 minutes into the match, they were forced to substitute Gannon-Doak due to injury.
Scottish fans may well remember this match for years to come, as they strive to reemerge on the world football stage. While both Scotland and Norway have been absent from World Cup appearances since 1998, Scotland made returns to the European Championship in 2021 and 2024. Meanwhile, Norway recently secured their place in the World Cup with an impressive 4–1 victory away against Italy.
