Veteran coach Vernon Denmark has been appointed the new head coach of the boys’ basketball team at Social Circle High School, as announced in a recent social media update from Social Circle Athletics.
Denmark arrives in Social Circle with a rich coaching background that spans over two decades. His journey began at Heritage High School, where he took on his first head-coaching role in the varsity arena. During his six-year tenure there, Denmark achieved an impressive 111-55 record, showcasing his ability to lead and develop young talent.
Following his successful stint at Heritage, Denmark transitioned to Stockbridge High School for the 2019-20 season. While his initial years were challenging, marked by back-to-back losing seasons, he turned a corner in his third year, securing a winning record of 16-9 in the 2021-22 campaign. However, his subsequent season proved to be his most difficult yet, finishing at 3-21.
After four seasons at Stockbridge, Denmark moved on to Forest Park for the 2022-23 season. His first two years there were tough, reflected in a combined record of 3-41. Yet, in a promising turn, his latest season culminated in a 10-17 record, signaling a potential resurgence.
Overall, as Denmark embarks on his fourth head coaching position, his career record stands at 154-181.
Denmark steps into this role following Norman Jones, who parted ways with the team after three seasons as the boys’ head coach, alongside two seasons at the helm of the girls’ team. In a statement released last month, Social Circle City Schools announced that Jones and the program had “mutually agreed to part ways.”
During his time leading the boys’ program, Jones posted a 36-45 overall record, with his teams struggling in the playoffs, finishing with an 0-3 mark. His tenure with the girls’ team yielded a 22-32 record and an 0-2 postseason showing. As Denmark takes over, he brings hope and experience, eager to guide Social Circle’s basketball program toward new heights.
