Solvang’s Month-Long Holiday Extravaganza: Daily Light & Music Shows, a “Nisser Adventure” Scavenger Hunt, Expanded Nighttime Makers Markets, Carolers, Candlelight Tours, and a New Year’s Countdown Await in One of America’s Most Enchanting Christmas Towns
Mark your calendars! Solvang, California, proudly announces the preliminary dates and plans for this year’s Solvang Christmas Festival (affectionately known as ‘Yule-Fest’). Set in the picturesque Santa Ynez Valley, this annual celebration will kick off on Friday, November 29, 2024, and run through Sunday, January 5, 2025. Renowned as one of the nation’s “most Christmassy towns,” Solvang offers a delightful escape for those seeking a European holiday atmosphere without the hassle of transatlantic travel.
City Manager Randy Murphy remarked, “In addition to our weekend festivities, we’ve crafted a variety of daily experiences to keep both locals and visitors entertained throughout the week. A highlight this year is our expanded nighttime Makers Market, featuring open-air holiday shopping under the stars every Wednesday evening leading up to Christmas.”
Among the festive daily activities, the Solvang Park will showcase a free Light & Music Showeach night from November 29 to January 5. This dazzling holiday display, located at the corner of Mission Drive and First Street, will feature choreographed light and music sequences with two alternating shows every hour from 5:00 PM through 9:00 PM.
Another beloved daily event is the Nisser Adventure. Participants of all ages can embark on a city-wide scavenger hunt for the elusive Solvang Nisser (Christmas elves) hidden throughout downtown. Starting November 29, visitors can pick up clues at the Solvang Visitor Center that will guide them to these secret spots. Each successful discovery earns participants a special keepsake from Solvang.
Three Wednesdays in December—December 4, 11, and 18—will feature the Solvang Christmas Fest Makers Market, running from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM in Solvang Park. Celebrated as one of the “6 US Christmas markets that feel like a fairy tale,” this open-air night market will offer a delightful selection of unique crafts, seasonal treats, and gifts fashioned by local artisans.
Select dates from November 30 to December 28 will play host to the popular Solvang Christmas Candlelight Tours. These special tours offer an enchanting stroll through Solvang’s historic streets, accompanied by Christmas carols and fascinating tales of Danish traditions and local history. Participants will be guided by costumed hosts and will receive LED candles to illuminate their path. Tickets will go on sale in early October 2024.
The festive season officially ignites on Friday, December 6, at 5:30 PM with the Solvang Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in Solvang Park. This cherished event will feature ballerinas circling the tree, live entertainment, caroling, and, of course, the highly anticipated lighting of the tree at approximately 6:30 PM.
The celebration continues the following morning, Saturday, December 7, at 11:00 AM, with the 2024 Solvang Julefest Parade. Families can enjoy marching bands, horses, classic cars, and a myriad of other entries parading through the streets. Afterwards, children are invited to meet Mr. Claus in Solvang Park from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
Meet-and-greet sessions with Santa will take place on weekends throughout December (December 14, 15, 21, and 22) from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM in Solvang Park. Additionally, a merry group of carolers will entertain visitors downtown on December 7, 14, 15, and 21 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
The festivities will reach a crescendo with the introduction of the “Copenhagen Countdown” on Tuesday, December 31, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM in Solvang Park. Attendees can count down to New Year’s in Denmark (3:00 PM Pacific) amid lively music, children’s activities, and local vendors (more details to be announced).
Rounding out the celebrations is the annual Solvang Christmas Tree Burn, generally held in early January as a symbolic finale to the month-long Julefest. Scheduled for Friday, January 10, at 5:00 PM (weather permitting), this event is one of the largest fire safety demonstrations along the California Central Coast.
Murphy added, “Solvang’s Danish heritage and Old World charm render our village even more magical during the Christmas season. The infusion of holiday spirit allows both locals and visitors to immerse themselves in what feels like a cherished holiday film, a story we love to share year after year.”
Aside from the festivities, Solvang invites visitors to explore its rich Danish-American ambiance, exquisite pastries, and a fantastic array of wine tasting options. The town is also home to unique boutiques, gourmet eateries, and charming gift shops, providing everything from artisanal street food to traditional Danish fare and MICHELIN-rated dining experiences. Whether it’s a warm cup of locally-roasted coffee or a handcrafted spice blend, Solvang ensures every visit is an indulgent escape.
Dog-friendly and ideal for families, the Solvang Julefest offers something for everyone, combining cherished holiday activities with the vibrant spirit of California’s wine country.
