Christian Eriksen has reassured fans that he is “doing well” after experiencing a concerning episode during Denmark’s friendly match against Ukraine. The incident unfolded in the 65th minute when footage captured Eriksen clutching his chest before collapsing on the field; the match, held in Odense, was subsequently abandoned.
The midfielder has a history of heart issues, having been fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) after suffering a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020. However, in an Instagram post, Eriksen emphasized that this recent incident was distinct: “I want to let everyone know that I am doing well and that I am home with my family.”
In the wake of his collapse, players from both Denmark and Ukraine formed a protective circle around Eriksen as medical staff administered care, highlighting the gravity of the moment. Amidst the emotional distress, many players were visibly shaken, demonstrating the profound impact such events can have on the sport.
Eriksen further explained, “As you can probably imagine, receiving a shock from my ICD has had a major impact on both me and my family, but I want to reassure everyone that this was a different situation from what happened in 2021.” He expressed his gratitude for the swift response of the medical team, noting, “Thanks to their expertise, my ICD did exactly what it was designed to do: protect me when I needed it.”
Currently, Eriksen’s focus is on recovery, cherishing time with family, planning a vacation, and enjoying moments playing football with his children.
### A Recall to 2021
In 2021, Eriksen faced a harrowing ordeal during a European Championship match in Copenhagen against Finland, where he collapsed and required life-saving CPR after his cardiac arrest. Following that event, the midfielder was fitted with an ICD to manage his heart condition.
Unfortunately, this life-saving device created challenges for his career in Italy, as regulations prohibited players from competing while fitted with an ICD, leading to the termination of his contract with Inter Milan.
However, Eriksen made a triumphant return to football in January 2022 with Brentford, later joining Manchester United in the summer. During his time at United, he made 107 appearances, scored eight goals, and celebrated victories in the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
Following the conclusion of his contract in 2025, Eriksen has embarked on a new chapter, currently playing for German side Wolfsburg, continuing to embrace the love of the game.
