Thomas Partey Prepared for Showdown Against England at FIFA World Cup
Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey is poised to take the field for his national team as they face England in the FIFA World Cup on Tuesday. Speaking at a press conference, the former Arsenal star expressed his readiness to contribute despite recent challenges.
“Things happen outside of football that you can’t control, but I’m fine now and I’m ready to play,” Partey affirmed.
The midfielder missed Ghana’s opening match in Group L, where the team secured a victory against Panama. His absence was due to a visa denial that stemmed from ongoing rape charges in the UK, which has posed a significant hurdle in his career. Despite Ghana’s formal complaint to the Canadian government in an effort to challenge the decision, the appeal was ultimately dismissed.
In contrast, Tuesday’s match against England will take place in the USA, part of a triumvirate of nations—along with Canada and Mexico—hosting this year’s World Cup finals.
Last summer, Thomas Partey faced serious allegations, including five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. Subsequently, he was charged with two additional rape counts. He maintains his innocence, pleading not guilty to accusations from four different women, and has not been convicted.
Looking forward to the game, Partey expressed enthusiasm about facing familiar foes from his time in London, notably England internationals Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka. “I’m really happy to see them again. I hope they bring their best and that we also get the opportunity to play against the best, compete, and enjoy the game,” he said.
As the match approaches, it’s worth noting that the English Football Association has declared that their players will refrain from commenting on the situation surrounding Partey.
Both England and Ghana currently sit on three points in Group L, while Panama and Croatia remain without score.
