Christian Eriksen to Begin Rehabilitation in Denmark Following Incident During Friendly Match
Christian Eriksen, the renowned Danish midfielder, is set to embark on an individual rehabilitation program in Denmark, following a worrying collapse during a friendly match last month.
The incident occurred during a game against Ukraine in Odense in June, when Eriksen fell to the ground in distress midway through the second half, prompting immediate medical attention and resulting in the match being abandoned shortly thereafter. Fortunately, the 34-year-old was able to walk off the pitch with assistance.
Eriksen, who previously played for Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, has an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) — a sophisticated form of pacemaker — after experiencing a cardiac arrest during Euro 2020 while facing Finland in 2021.
Reflecting on last month’s episode, Eriksen remarked that it “was a different situation from what happened in 2021,” emphasizing the life-saving efficacy of his ICD, which “did exactly what it was designed to do: protect me when I needed it most.” He reassured fans and supporters that he is “doing well” and spending quality time at home with his family.
Currently contracted to German club VfL Wolfsburg, Eriksen’s rehabilitation journey will take place in his home country, as confirmed by the club. “Following discussions with VfL managing director Dieter Hecking, it was decided that the 34-year-old will complete it in his native Denmark,” the team announced.
Wolfsburg expressed their ongoing support, stating, “VfL remain in regular contact with Christian and the doctors overseeing his treatment. We continue to wish Christian all the very best with his rehabilitation.”
