While the oak processionary spider has yet to make an appearance in Randers or Frederiksberg Municipality, both areas are bracing for the potential arrival of its troublesome caterpillar.
According to reports from TV2 Østjylland and DR, Frederiksberg’s Mayor, Michael Vindfeldt (S), recently expressed concern over sightings of the caterpillar at three locations near Amager Fælled, in the adjacent municipality of Copenhagen. In a Facebook post, he assured residents that a thorough inspection of all oak trees in Frederiksberg is underway, with the review expected to wrap up early next week.
“If the larvae are found here, we’re prepared. We already have an agreement with pest controllers to remove any nests immediately,” Vindfeldt stated. He also mentioned that the administration plans to install nest boxes to attract titmice, the caterpillar’s natural predators.
“We’ve ordered the first 100 nest boxes,” he added, highlighting the beneficial role of weevils in keeping the caterpillar population in check.
In Randers Municipality, Mayor Rosa Lykke Yde (SF) has also taken proactive steps, urging the administration to prepare for what she referred to as the “caterpillar from hell.” In a press release, she emphasized the importance of readiness: “It is absolutely crucial for the citizens that the municipality is well-prepared, enabling swift action if it becomes necessary.”
Residents of Randers are encouraged to contribute to efforts against the caterpillar by enticing birds, such as voles and blue tits, with bird seed and nesting boxes, as these creatures help control the caterpillar’s spread.
The oak processionary caterpillar has already been recorded in several municipalities, including Odense, Kerteminde, Nyborg, Morsø, Amager, Nordfyn, and Herning. Notably, a single larva can possess around 60,000 stinging hairs, which can lead to severe itching, skin rashes, eye irritation, respiratory issues, and in rare cases, severe allergic reactions.
This year, Odense experienced a notable outbreak, causing considerable discomfort for its residents.
