Denmark’s national animal isn’t the majestic swan or the charming red squirrel. Instead, it’s a rather unexpected symbol: a large, rotund sow, distinguished by the passage of time with numerous extra teats and a uterus so expansive that it has the capacity to bear more piglets than it can safely deliver.
In cases where this overwhelming fertility becomes a reality, tragically, some of the piglets may remain in the womb, decaying and ultimately leading to the sow’s death from blood poisoning. It’s a stark reminder of the harsh realities of nature, even as it underscores the unique characteristics that make this animal emblematic of Denmark.
