Tragedy Strikes in Brussels High-Rise Fire
In a heart-wrenching incident on Tuesday, six individuals lost their lives in a fire that engulfed a high-rise building in the heart of Brussels. This tragic event has captured the attention of news agencies such as Reuters and AFP.
Authorities confirmed the grim discovery of multiple victims trapped in an elevator within the structure. Reports indicate that these individuals were construction workers engaged in a major renovation project at the site, known as the Oxy Tower. The fire rapidly spread through the elevator shaft, effectively isolating several workers on different floors.
Initially, emergency responders estimated that two to three fatalities had been located in the elevator, while two others were seriously injured and rushed to the hospital. However, as the evening unfolded, the death toll was tragically revised upwards. “We had limited access to one of the two elevator shafts and discovered two or three bodies within,” said Brecht Speybrouck, a spokesman for the local labor inspectorate.
As investigations continue, the cause of the fire remains unknown. The local fire service has noted that more than 200 workers were present at the site when the blaze erupted.
In a display of solidarity, Belgian King Philippe and Prime Minister Bart De Wever visited the scene, expressing their condolences and support to the rescue teams. The country’s interior minister, Bernard Quintin, shared a sentiment echoed by many, stating he was “horrified” by the unfolding tragedy.
This devastating event serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by workers and the urgent need for safety measures during construction activities.
