Denmark Moves to Ban Gambling Ads During Live Sports Broadcasts

In a decisive step towards promoting responsible gambling, the Danish government has reached an agreement to impose stringent restrictions on gambling advertisements during live sports broadcasts. This initiative is part of a broader strategy aimed at mitigating gambling addiction and protecting children from its associated risks, with plans to implement these measures no later than January 1, 2027.

On Friday, the Danish parliament unanimously passed the ‘Gaming Package 1,’ a legislative effort designed to curb the mounting concerns surrounding the influence of gambling marketing. Among the most notable provisions is a comprehensive ban on gambling advertisements, effectively halting promotions 10 minutes before a sports event and continuing until 10 minutes after its conclusion.

The legislation goes further by prohibiting the display of live odds on stadium banners and restricting the participation of celebrities and influencers in gambling-related marketing campaigns. These moves underscore Denmark’s commitment to fostering a safer environment for its citizens, particularly the younger demographic who are increasingly exposed to gambling through various media channels.
