Miroslav Koubek’s First Challenge: A World Cup Play-off Semi-final Against Ireland

11:03, 16 Jan 2026Updated 12:07, 16 Jan 2026

In a move that has captured the attention of football fans, new Czech Republic manager Miroslav Koubek is preparing for his debut match on March 26 against Ireland in the World Cup play-off semi-final. He’s taken a moment to assess the challenge that lies ahead, as well as the potential for a final against Denmark or North Macedonia.

Koubek stepped into the managerial spotlight in December, taking over after Ivan Hašek’s tenure ended following a disheartening defeat to the Faroe Islands. At 74, Koubek is best known for his successful stint at Viktoria Plzeň.

The upcoming clash with Ireland promises to be a test of Koubek’s strategical prowess. “I’ve studied all of Ireland’s qualifying matches and am currently analyzing Denmark’s performances,” he stated. “The Irish team plays with heart; their approach is simple and straightforward, characterized by aggression and intensity.”

Should the Czech team prevail in Prague, they would likely face Denmark in the final, a prospect that Koubek regards with caution. “The Danes have a well-rounded attack and are more football-oriented,” he noted. “While they may have defensive vulnerabilities, I prefer not to elaborate on those just yet.”

Koubek emphasized the importance of understanding the strengths and weaknesses of their opponents: “We’re examining both defensive and offensive set pieces; it’s a lot to process. It’s crucial for us to determine the best lineup and player roles for each matchup.”

“While we face tough opponents, that’s the reality of the play-offs,” he added, displaying an awareness of the high stakes involved.

As Koubek settles into his role, he faces the backdrop of recent unrest within the team. Following a challenging qualifying campaign, Tomáš Souček has been stripped of his captaincy ahead of the next match.

The Czech FA has issued an apology on behalf of the players after they declined to acknowledge the fans following a 6-0 victory over Gibraltar. Souček later explained that the players felt a disconnect with the fanbase.

In a surprising move, the players forfeited their financial bonuses for the match, opting instead to donate the amount to charity. The association has since reaffirmed its support for fans’ right to voice their opinions regarding the team’s performance.
