World and Olympic handball champions Denmark celebrated a remarkable victory on Sunday, securing the European Championship title by defeating Germany 34-27 in a thrilling match held on home turf in Herning. This victory marked Denmark’s first European title in 14 years and their third overall, further embellishing their prestigious trophy cabinet.
Leading the charge was Simon Pytlick, who showcased his scoring prowess by netting eight goals throughout the encounter. The win underscores Denmark’s dominance over Germany, as they have not suffered a defeat against their rivals since 2016. This streak includes an overwhelming 39-26 victory in the gold medal match at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, and decisive wins of 40-30 at last year’s World Championships and 31-26 in the group stages of this tournament.
Germany’s team manager, Benjamin Chatton, expressed a mix of disappointment and optimism following the defeat. “We are disappointed today, but tomorrow we will be even hungrier to beat the Danes,” he remarked. “We played an excellent tournament, and I am convinced this experience will propel our development. Hopefully, we can face the Danes in the final again next time.”
This final marked Germany’s first appearance at this stage of the competition since their last title win in 2016. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who was present at the match, lauded the team’s effort on social media, stating: “What a final, what a strong European Championship. You fought hard and showed nerves of steel and team spirit. We are proud of you.”
Earlier in the day, Croatia claimed the bronze medal, edging past Iceland with a nail-biting 34-33 victory.
In the award ceremony that followed, Denmark’s Magnus Saugstrup Jensen proudly accepted the trophy from EHF President Michael Wiederer and Queen Mary of Denmark, capping off a triumphant day for the Danish handball team.
