Joshua Koppel’s academic journey has taken a significant leap forward, thanks to the prestigious Jacob Butski Memorial Scholarship. This financial support is further bolstered by funding from the Center for Global Programs and Services (CGPS), the Honors College, and the Department of Economics. Additionally, Koppel participated in the Delaware Diplomats Scholarship Program, paving the way for his transformative study abroad experience. His spring semester in Denmark has already been marked by an exhilarating day trip to Helsingør with friends.
Beyond the confines of traditional classrooms, Koppel is diving deep into the rich tapestry of Danish politics and culture. In his inaugural month abroad, he has seamlessly engaged in cultural excursions, exploring churches, museums, and castles. Each interaction with the locals has been a memorable encounter.
“I’m taking part in the visiting host program, which connects me with locals without the need for a homestay. My host is fantastic,” Koppel shares enthusiastically. “We even caught an opera together and had an extensive discussion about Danish politics.”
These impactful cross-cultural experiences are what inspire emeritus geography professor Peter Rees to steadfastly lead this immersive study abroad initiative. For over 41 years, the University of Delaware has nurtured a vital collaboration with DIS, a partnership that Rees himself established to broaden study abroad opportunities at the university. Remarkably, the DIS Copenhagen program stands as the longest-running semester abroad initiative at UD, with Rees even advising students whose parents once participated in the same program.
A self-proclaimed “Danophile,” Rees holds a deep admiration for Danish society and culture. His ambition is to offer students profound insights into Danish life, coupled with hands-on learning experiences that extend beyond academic study. According to Rees, the DIS program boasts the broadest array of subject offerings among UD’s semester abroad options, spanning 29 diverse fields ranging from child development to neuroscience and engineering.
“With such a plethora of opportunities for in-depth cultural exposure, students frequently comment that their experiences here are life-changing,” Rees notes. “They come to value Denmark’s human-centric approach, where issues are resolved through compromise rather than conflict.”
For Koppel, this life-altering journey has only just begun.
“The opportunities offered by DIS are astounding, but I understood that participating required additional financial support,” he explains.
In addition to the Jacob Butski Memorial Scholarship, Koppel has garnered support from various campus departments, including CGPS, the Honors College, and the Department of Economics, as well as from the Delaware Diplomats Scholarship Program.
“While in Denmark, I aim to engage in activities, travel, and fully immerse myself in the city’s experiences,” Koppel articulates. “By dedicating time to my studies and cultural interactions, I’m gaining insights here that would be diluted if I were burdened by financial worries.”
For those interested, applications for DIS scholarships, including the Jacob Butski Memorial Scholarship, are now open. The deadline for summer program applications is March 15, while those for fall programs can be submitted until April 1.
