Danish Football Match Postponed After Christian Eriksen Collapses
In a concerning turn of events during a friendly match, Denmark’s game against Ukraine on Sunday was abruptly halted when Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch.
The incident unfolded in the 65th minute; Eriksen, now 34, appeared to clutch his chest before collapsing to the ground, prompting officials to swiftly stop the game. While Eriksen was conscious enough to walk to an ambulance, a statement from the Danish Football Federation later revealed that he had been “briefly unconscious.”
This moment is particularly significant given Eriksen’s medical history. In June 2021, while playing for Inter Milan at the European Championship, he suffered a cardiac arrest that led to the implantation of a cardioverter defibrillator. This device has since been crucial in helping to regulate his heart’s rhythm.
National team physician Dr. Morten Boesen expressed relief over Eriksen’s swift recovery. “As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should,” he remarked. “He was briefly unconscious but regained consciousness very quickly.”
As the team maintains communication with Eriksen and the hospital staff, further examinations are planned to assess the cause of this recent incident.
Following his life-threatening episode in 2021, Eriksen took a year off from the sport before making a remarkable comeback with Brentford. He has since continued his career with Manchester United and VfL Wolfsburg. This year, he has made six appearances for Denmark without scoring.
