Christian Eriksen is “in good spirits” and is expected to be discharged from the hospital shortly, following a concerning incident during Denmark’s international friendly against Ukraine, according to the national team’s physician.
The 34-year-old midfielder was seen clutching his chest before collapsing on the pitch during the 65th minute of the match in Odense on Sunday. Fortunately, he managed to walk off the field unaided after receiving prompt medical attention, later undergoing additional tests at Odense University Hospital.
In a reassuring update from the Danish Football Federation on Monday morning, team physician Morten Boesen stated, “I spoke with Christian this morning, and he is doing well. He is with his family and is in good spirits. The expectation is that he will be discharged soon and can return home.”
Boesen emphasized that the federation is committed to the well-being of its players and staff, maintaining regular communication with them during this time.
Eriksen, widely regarded as one of Denmark’s finest players, has faced medical challenges before. He received an implantable cardioverter defibrillator after suffering a cardiac arrest during his country’s opening match at the European Championship in 2021. That harrowing moment shocked the soccer world, as Eriksen was resuscitated after a prolonged period of on-field medical care, with Boesen at the forefront of the emergency response. Eriksen later revealed that he “was gone from this world for five minutes.”
Remarkably, he returned to professional soccer just 259 days after the incident, signing with Brentford in the Premier League. Following a stint at Manchester United from 2022 to 2025, he has now joined German club Wolfsburg through the 2026-27 season.
Neither Denmark nor Ukraine has qualified for the upcoming World Cup, but the focus for now is on Eriksen’s recovery.
