Christian Eriksen is set to embark on an individual rehabilitation program in his homeland of Denmark, following a harrowing incident during an international friendly match earlier this June. His club, Wolfsburg, confirmed the news in a recent announcement.
The match against Ukraine was abruptly halted in the 65th minute when Eriksen collapsed on the pitch at Odense Isstadion. The 34-year-old midfielder experienced a moment of distress, clutching his chest as his implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) intervened to regulate his heart rhythm. Fortunately, Eriksen was alert enough to walk to a waiting ambulance, which transported him to a nearby hospital for further evaluation.
This incident was not Eriksen’s first brush with cardiac health issues. He was fitted with an ICD after suffering a cardiac arrest while playing for Denmark against Finland during the 2021 European Championships.
In a heartfelt statement released on the club’s social media channels, Wolfsburg expressed their support: “Christian Eriksen will soon begin the next stage of his recovery. We remain in regular contact with Christian and his medical team, and we continue to wish him all the best throughout his rehabilitation.”
The club’s managing director, Dieter Hecking, confirmed that Eriksen would be undergoing this rehabilitation process in Denmark, a decision reached after thorough discussions.
Eriksen joined Wolfsburg as a free agent last September, having parted ways with Manchester United. He is contracted with the Bundesliga side until the summer of 2027. Last season, the talented playmaker, known for his time with Ajax, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan, and Brentford, made 31 appearances in Germany’s top flight, netting three goals and contributing nine assists.
At the time of his collapse, Denmark was leading Ukraine 2-1. Quick-thinking medical staff from both teams rushed to Eriksen’s aid, leading to the match’s cancellation. Denmark’s team doctor, Martin Boesen, reassured the media afterward that Eriksen’s pacemaker functioned as intended. He recounted that Eriksen was “briefly unconscious but regained consciousness very quickly,” managing to walk off the pitch under his own power.
This match marked Eriksen’s 151st appearance for Denmark, a national team that, unfortunately, did not qualify for this summer’s World Cup in North America.
