During our recent trip to Copenhagen, we ventured to the Viking Ship Museum, a destination that turned out to be a delightful surprise. Nestled about a half-hour train ride from the city center, followed by a brief bus journey on route #203, the museum promised a day of family fun, and it certainly delivered.
Initially, I anticipated spending a few hours there, keeping the kids entertained. However, we found ourselves drawn in for much longer, captivated by the array of engaging activities. The museum offers a hands-on experience that is both educational and entertaining. Children can examine ancient Viking weapons, learn the art of sword fighting using wooden shields and swords under the expert guidance of a staff member, and even decorate their own replica shields and swords to take home. They can also try their hand at rope-making—this is just a glimpse of the many experiences available.
Inside the museum, we marveled at the remnants of five Viking ships, expertly unearthed from the harbor, and delved into the fascinating tales of their reconstruction. One of the highlights was a film that depicted the journey of a crew sailing a replica ship from Roskilde to Dublin, all while seated in a replica vessel, immersing us in the adventure.
The allure of the Viking experience continued as the children donned traditional Viking costumes, transforming into little warriors for the day. As if that weren’t enough, we had the chance to take one of the replicated Viking boats out on the water. With no motors involved, it was just us, the oars, and the gentle breeze guiding us back to shore. The panoramic views of the town from the water were simply breathtaking.
With so many activities available, there was something for every family member to enjoy, whether participating or simply observing. The Viking Ship Museum is undoubtedly a must-visit for families exploring Copenhagen, promising a memorable day filled with history and adventure.
