Enthusiasm Builds for 2027 Copenhagen Marathon
The allure of running through the picturesque streets of Copenhagen has captured the imagination of many. A staggering 80,937 individuals have thrown their hats into the ring for a spot in the 2027 Copenhagen Marathon, according to a recent announcement from Sparta Atletik & Løb.
With only 35,000 places up for grabs, organizers have decided to implement a lottery system for the first time. This change comes in response to the overwhelming demand, as the 2026 marathon sold out within a mere day, prompting a need for more equitable access to the race.
“The incredible interest highlights Copenhagen’s status as one of Europe’s premier marathon destinations,” affirmed Dorte Vibjerg, CEO of Sparta Athletics & Running. She emphasized that the lottery system has allowed applicants from all corners of the globe a fair chance to participate, thanks to a three-week registration window.
The applicants encompass a remarkable 160 nationalities, with Denmark unsurprisingly leading the pack. Following closely are Sweden and Great Britain, showing a diverse range of interest from neighboring countries. Notably, women now represent 37 percent of applicants—a significant rise from less than 30 percent this year.
The 25 to 29 age group is particularly prominent, accounting for 23.5 percent of those who have applied. As anticipation builds, the marathon, covering 42.195 kilometers through the heart of Copenhagen, is set to take place on May 9, 2027.
This event is not just a race; it represents a unique opportunity for participants to immerse themselves in the vibrant culture and scenery of one of Europe’s most beloved cities.
