India Stumbles in Uber Cup Opener Against Denmark Despite Sindhu’s Heroics
In a thrilling start to their Uber Cup campaign, India faced a challenging defeat, losing 2-3 to hosts Denmark on Friday, April 24. The Indian team had high hopes as PV Sindhu, the two-time Olympic medallist, secured an early lead by defeating Denmark’s world No. 21, Line Christophersen, in a nail-biting match that ended 21-13, 18-21, 21-17.
Sindhu’s victory gave India a fleeting advantage, but the momentum quickly shifted. Unnati Hooda and Tanvi Sharma fell short in their respective singles matches, allowing Denmark to surge ahead with a 2-1 lead. In a crucial doubles contest, the duo of Shruti Mishra and Priya Konjengbam battled valiantly but ultimately succumbed to their opponents, sealing India’s fate at 3-1.
However, in a final display of resilience, Tanisha Crasto teamed up with Sindhu to claim a consolation victory against Denmark’s pair, reducing the final score to a respectable 2-3.
A Closer Look at Sindhu’s Match Against Christophersen
Sindhu began her match with poise, asserting her dominance in the first game with relative ease. Yet, Christophersen, undeterred, matched her intensity in the second game. The score teetered from 6-6 to 11-11, with Christophersen eventually pulling ahead thanks to increasing errors from Sindhu’s side. The Danish player capitalized on this momentum to level the match and push for a decisive third game.
With support from her teammates, Sindhu regrouped and showcased her sharp angles and deception. Despite Christophersen holding a brief lead at 15-12, Sindhu responded with impressive resolve. At 15-15, the tide shifted in her favor as she seized control, ultimately clinching victory by winning six of the final seven points. She finished off the match with a powerful body smash and a precise down-the-line winner, leaving her mark on the day.
Indian Team’s Struggles Beyond Sindhu’s Triumph
Though Sindhu gave India an initial boost, the team struggled to maintain their footing. World No. 3 Unnati Hooda displayed commendable grit, saving multiple match points but narrowly falling to Denmark’s Line Højmark Kjaersfeldt, ranked 26th in the world, with a score of 12-21, 23-25.
Tanvi Sharma faced her own challenges, initially winning the first game against Amalie Schulz, only to falter in the subsequent games, ending 21-19, 16-21, 16-21.
In doubles, the pairing of Shruti Mishra and Priya Konjengbam missed two potential match points, concluding a tense contest with a scoreline of 17-21, 21-11, 21-23 to Amalie Cecilie Kudsk and Mette Werge.
In the final match, Crasto and Sindhu sealed a consolation win as Denmark’s Alexandra Boje and Christine Busch retired after just 36 minutes of play.
Looking ahead, India aims to regroup and bounce back against Ukraine on Saturday, April 25, before facing a steeper challenge against China on Monday, April 27.
