Wales’ Ambitions Dashed in UEFA Men’s Under-19 Championship After Defeat to Denmark
Wales’ aspirations of securing a FIFA Under-20 World Cup play-off spot came to a disappointing end following a 3-0 loss to Denmark in the UEFA Men’s Under-19 Championship. Under the guidance of Chris Gunter, the Welsh side exited the tournament without a point, having lost all three matches in Group A and failing to find the net.
With this victory, Denmark advances to a play-off against the third-placed team from Group B, scheduled for Wednesday at Bangor’s Nantporth Stadium. The winner of that encounter will earn a coveted place in the inter-confederation play-offs for the 2027 FIFA Under-20 World Cup.
Both Wales and Denmark approached this final group fixture at Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground in search of redemption, each having endured defeats to Spain and Germany in their earlier matches. These outcomes had already affirmed Spain and Germany as the top two teams in the group, granting them semi-final berths and automatic qualification for next year’s Under-20 World Cup in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.
The match began with a tightly contested opening 20 minutes, but Denmark struck first when captain Ollti Hyseni curled a stunning shot from 20 yards into the net, leaving Welsh goalkeeper Logan Stretch no chance to intervene. As the first half progressed, Denmark continued to pose a threat, with Alfred Gethler rattling the crossbar from distance just before the interval.
The Danish side doubled their lead a mere four minutes into the second half, courtesy of a well-taken free-kick by Hjallte Larke that found the back of the net. Hyseni then added to Denmark’s tally with a second goal, showcasing his skills with a remarkable individual effort that sealed a comfortable victory.
The match concluded on a sour note for Wales, as Cardiff City’s Jac Thomas was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Julius Lucena in the closing minute, reducing his team to ten men.
