A tragic shooting incident in Nørresundby on Friday has claimed the life of a 62-year-old man, leaving two others injured, including the suspected shooter. North Jutland Police confirmed the details in a press release issued late that evening.
Police Inspector Claus Danø stated that investigations continue, offering some preliminary insights. “At this point, we believe there was no prior connection between the deceased and the alleged perpetrator. However, we cannot provide specific details about the circumstances at this moment,” he explained.
Danø emphasized that the police are treating this as an isolated incident, distinctly non-gang-related in nature.
The suspect, a 48-year-old man, is scheduled for a constitutional hearing on Saturday. The prosecution intends to request that the proceedings be conducted behind closed doors, as indicated in the press release. Should the suspect be unable to attend due to his injuries, he may be tried in absentia.
Further complicating the investigation, authorities have not disclosed whether additional suspects are involved. While the motive for the shooting remains unclear, Inspector Danø noted that investigative work is ongoing.
On Friday evening and into the night, police activity was concentrated on an address in Dronningensgade, while officers also secured the crime scene, made challenging by smoke in the area. As a result, access has been limited.
The alarming incident unfolded shortly after 1:42 p.m. when North Jutland Police responded to reports on Virkelyst road. Upon arrival, officers were met with gunfire from the suspect, resulting in one officer suffering a gunshot wound to the leg. That officer underwent surgery on Friday evening but is currently in stable condition.
In the course of the confrontation, the suspect was struck by police gunfire. The deceased man was discovered by officers during their search of the premises, reinforcing the severity of the situation.
In adherence to protocol, the Independent Police Complaints Authority (DUP) has been informed of the incident, a standard procedure following police-involved injuries.
Authorities revealed that the suspected shooter was armed with a rifle during the incident. Inspector Danø urged witnesses to come forward and report any information, inviting anyone with insights or who may have experienced distressing events to reach out via the police hotline at 114.
This incident continues to unfold, with police urging community members to stay informed and engaged.
