Solvej Balle Misses Out at the National Book Awards
On Thursday night, Danish author Solvej Balle found herself among the hopefuls at the National Book Awards, but ultimately was passed over for the prestigious honor. This announcement came during a live broadcast on the National Book Foundation’s website.
Balle was nominated in the “translated literature” category for the third volume of her ambitious seven-part series, “On Calculation of Volume”. However, the award went to Argentinian writer Gabriela Cabezon Camara for her evocative work, “We Are Green And Trembling,” a title that captures a sense of unease and vulnerability.
The “translated literature” category featured five nominees, highlighting a range of international voices. The English translation of Balle’s nominated work was expertly crafted by Sophia Hersi Smith and Jennifer Russell.
According to the National Book Foundation, Balle’s book offers a meditative exploration of solitude, as the protagonist, Tara Shelter, experiences a profound realization one November day: she is not alone in the world.
Born in 1962, Balle debuted with “Lyrefugl” in 1986. Among her most recognized works is “According to the Law,” released in 1993. Her current seven-volume series, “On Calculation of Space,” marks what many regard as a significant comeback for the author.
Earlier this year, Balle’s literary prowess was once again acknowledged with a nomination for the International Booker Prize for the first volume in her series. That award ultimately went to Indian author Bani Mushtaq for her book “Heart Lamp” in May.
While Balle may not have secured this latest accolade, her contributions to literature continue to resonate, illuminating the complexities of human experience with depth and nuance.
