Chelsea’s Filip Jorgensen Eyes Denmark’s Starting Goalkeeper Spot Ahead of World Cup

In a promising turn of events for Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen, the young talent has been informed that a starting position with the Danish national team could be within reach for next summer’s World Cup—provided he gets more playing time.

At just 23 years old, the competition for the number one spot in Denmark remains fierce. However, Jorgensen has yet to make his Premier League debut under coach Enzo Maresca. His only league appearance this season came after Robert Sanchez’s red card in a match against Manchester United, which saw him come on early in the game. His opportunities have largely been limited to two starts in the Carabao Cup and one appearance in the Champions League against Ajax.

For a goalkeeper of Jorgensen’s caliber and international aspirations, such limited playtime could impact his prospects as preparations ramp up for the 2026 World Cup.

The situation within Denmark’s national team is precarious, particularly in goal. Mads Hermansen has faced challenges maintaining consistent form at West Ham, while veteran Kasper Schmeichel’s recent performances, including a disappointing showing against Belarus and a 4-2 defeat to Scotland, have raised concerns about his reliability.

These disappointing results mean Denmark must now contend with the European play-offs in March to secure their place in next year’s tournament. Should Jorgensen see an increase in playtime, he could very well be the frontrunner to don the gloves during those critical matches.

With the January transfer window on the horizon, Jorgensen’s talent, youth, and reputation are likely to attract interest from various European clubs, especially if he becomes available on loan.

Such a move would certainly have ramifications for Chelsea, who currently have no intentions of reducing their goalkeeping depth, although they may opt to sign a replacement or even recall Mike Penders from his successful loan stint at Strasbourg.

Since his arrival at Chelsea from Villarreal in 2024, Jorgensen has made just 28 appearances, a stark contrast to the expectations set for one of Europe’s most promising young goalkeepers. As the clock ticks down to the World Cup, all eyes will be on Jorgensen to seize his opportunity.
