Hillerød Football Poised for a New Chapter as Season Approaches
In a refreshing turn of events last season, Hillerød Football emerged as a notable contender in the 1st division, thanks in part to the vision of head coach and former FCK legend Christian Lønstrup. As the new season looms, Lønstrup is eager for his team to once again secure a place among the top half of Denmark’s second-tier league.
However, he remains cautious about the lofty talks surrounding promotion. “After finishing fourth last year, there are certainly expectations from fans and management to aim even higher,” he acknowledges. “While I’m not sure if we have the resources to surpass that, setting a goal to reach the top six feels reasonable.”
The coach also recognizes the challenges posed by squad changes. “We’ve brought in new players, and it will take time for everyone to gel,” Lønstrup explains. He emphasizes that while the team has shown promise in training matches against formidable opponents, consistency remains a concern. “Our performance level varies too much,” he adds. “It’s crucial that we find our rhythm to compete effectively.”
Lønstrup anticipates a fiercely competitive season, noting that the distinction between the top and bottom of the table will likely be razor-thin. “There’s no clear favorite for promotion or relegation this year. The league is stronger than ever, with formidable teams dropping down from the Super League and strong newcomers from the 2nd division, such as AB and Vendsyssel.”
He expresses a broader sense of optimism for the league, stating, “We have the ability to beat anyone, but we can also fall short if we don’t reach our potential. It’s a sentiment that resonates across all teams in the division, creating the potential for an exhilarating season.”
Reflecting on the previous season, Lønstrup recalls how Hillerød narrowly missed out on Superliga promotion, finishing just four points shy. Looking ahead, the acquisition of experienced center-back Rasmus Thelander—a champion and European competitor with AaB—could prove pivotal for the team’s aspirations.
“One of our challenges last season was having too many players unaccustomed to pressure at this level,” Lønstrup remarks. “Rasmus brings invaluable experience. His guidance—whether during training, tactical discussions, or matches—will lighten the load for our younger players.” Highlighting Thelander’s immediate impact, he adds, “We can already see how he elevates those around him. It’s a tremendous boost to have such a leader on our side.”
On a potentially bittersweet note, Lønstrup acknowledges that club stalwart Jonatan Witt’s tenure may be approaching its end. The captain, who has been a mainstay since Hillerød’s amateur days in Serie 2, is currently being pursued by Superliga side Lyngby. “I’m aware of their interest,” Lønstrup confirms. “While we don’t wish to hinder his progress, finding a fair deal is paramount. Jonatan is not only one of our top players but also a key figure in our club’s culture.”
For the past three and a half years, Hillerød has faced the challenge of being a nomadic team, as their stadium has been deemed unfit for 1st division play. After stints playing on artificial turf in Farum and Helsingør, they are finally gearing up to start the season on their own natural grass pitch. “It’s fantastic to return to our own ground,” Lønstrup says, expressing his anticipation for the community’s support. “I’m eager to see how our fans respond.”
He adds, “Tactically, transitioning between grass and artificial surfaces during the season won’t change much for us.”
Hillerød will kick off the season with an away match against AaB, who struggled last season, finishing seventh. The match is set for Friday evening at 19:00—a compelling start to what promises to be an intriguing season.
