Nestled in the picturesque Salaca River Valley, the Vipp Salaca River guesthouse is a remarkable blend of contemporary Scandinavian design and historic charm. Once a humble fisherman’s log house dating back to the 19th century, this retreat has been revitalized into a stylish getaway accessible to all. Originally a roadhouse for travelers between Riga and Wolmar, the guesthouse now resides within the serene landscapes of Salaca National Park, thanks to a meticulous relocation effort.

The story of how Vipp stumbled upon this enchanting off-grid sanctuary traces back to Arturs Martinsons. Seventeen years ago, he acquired 42 acres of lush meadows and woodlands within Salaca National Park with dreams of crafting a family retreat. When he learned that an old fisherman’s house was set for demolition, Martinsons presented a bold idea to Vipp: why not transform this historical gem into one of their signature guesthouses? Thus began a unique collaboration between Martinsons and the Danish design company, which now boasts a portfolio of notable locations, from the quiet shores of Cold Hawaii to the scenic vistas of Italy.

The renovation journey began with painstakingly relocating each log from the original fisherman’s cottage to its new site, where it was reconstructed atop a sturdy foundation of 180 stones. Under the guidance of interior designer Julie Cloos Mølsgaard, the guesthouse spans 1,180 square feet, featuring a spacious open-plan living area. At its heart lies a modern Vipp V1 kitchen that seamlessly integrates with a dining and seating area, complete with a cozy fireplace.
The ground floor also hosts a twin bedroom with views of the surrounding woods, while the master bedroom occupies the upper level, adorned with a freestanding bathtub—a perfect spot for unwinding. The dark ceiling retains its historical character, now painted in a deep grey-brown that beautifully complements the rich tones of the log walls.

The surrounding landscape is alive with opportunities for adventure, whether it’s kayaking along the river, cross-country skiing on winter trails, foraging for mushrooms, or taking a refreshing swim. For those who prefer to embrace relaxation, the guesthouse offers an inviting outdoor lounge area, complete with stylish Vipp furniture, and a terrace featuring a wood-fired hot tub that boasts breathtaking views of the green expanse.

Kasper Egelund, CEO and a third-generation co-owner of Vipp, encapsulates the essence of this unique guesthouse, stating, “Surrounded by old-growth trees in Latvia’s national park, this new guesthouse, situated on the bank of the Salaca River, is a compact log cabin that demonstrates how older homes can be transformed for modern life while still maintaining their historic charm.”
