As a professional footballer at the highest level, national team star Pierre Emile Højbjerg has had many great experiences and met many prominent names.

Still, he was so shocked that he had to check if it was real when a very special invitation suddenly slipped through the letter slot in the French home.

But it was good enough.

“It’s not every day that a letter bounces through the door, inviting you to dinner at the presidential palace with the King and Queen and the presidential couple,” Højbjerg tells B.T. and the rest of the press present at the Danish national team camp in Helsingør.

The invitation with the Marseille player’s name was real and was also accepted as admission when he showed up at the Elysée Palace in Paris for a gala dinner during the Danish royal couple’s state visit to the French capital.

Here he was one of several special guests who were allowed to have dinner with President Emmanuel Macron and the Danish royal couple.

A very special experience that the Danish national team player was allowed to enjoy in very special company at his assigned seat for the event.

“I was sitting next to Christian Prudhomme, who is the director of the Tour de France, and we agreed that the Tour will come to Denmark again at some point.”

“Lars Løkke (Rasmussen, ed.), who was sitting opposite, confirmed,” the Dane says with a laugh about the very special experience.

Højbjerg also had the opportunity to exchange a few words with both King Frederik and Queen Mary as well as the French presidential couple.

And he didn’t come unprepared – he brought a very special gift with him for President Macron and King Frederik.

“The club gave me a shirt for both the president and the King. Believe it or not, he (Emmanuel Macron, ed.) is actually a Marseille fan,” explains Højbjerg about the gift, for which the King and Macron both thanked him profusely.

“You are aware that you are going to meet someone who is deeply rooted in our history. It is of course very special to be allowed to do so. I have deep respect for the Royal Couple and the way they represent the country,” says Højbjerg.

The 29-year-old midfielder is currently with the rest of the Danish national team ahead of the training matches against Northern Ireland and Lithuania.
