Spain Crowned World Champions Once Again
Even before the referee blew the final whistle in the World Cup showdown against Argentina, many believed Spain was destined for glory. Ferran Torres, the hero of the match and scorer of the decisive goal, certainly felt that way.
In the mixed zone, shortly after celebrating his team’s hard-fought victory in New Jersey, Torres expressed his gratitude to God for their success. “Fate was written in advance. We were meant to win,” he reflected. Despite the physical distance from their supporters back home, he added, “we tried to be as close to them as possible.”
It was in the second half of extra time, just 37 seconds in, that Torres made his mark, netting the only goal of the match. “It was a great relief,” he said, acknowledging the criticism he faced during the tournament. “But as I said, fate was written in advance.”
Thanking a higher power, Torres declared, “God always gives me the strength to continue, and in the end, He rewards those who truly deserve it.”
Statistically, Spain dominated the match, boasting a significant advantage in both play and opportunities. Argentina, remarkably, failed to register a single shot on goal during regulation time. When the final whistle blew after 120 minutes plus additional time, the shot tally stood at a staggering 20-2 in favor of Spain.
“Finals are tough,” Torres admitted. “When you face someone like Lionel Messi, it’s natural to feel apprehensive. But we always had faith in ourselves. We focused on playing our game, and I think we demonstrated that once again.”
This victory marks a monumental achievement for Spain, as they clinch their second World Cup title, the first coming 16 years ago in South Africa. With this latest triumph, the Spanish national team now proudly holds the titles of both reigning World and European champions.
