Nestled within the North Denmark Region lies the charming town of Vangså, a locale largely overlooked in the digital landscape. Conventional maps offer little more than a glimpse of its rugged beauty—wild waterways and untamed terrain that beckon for a closer look. These flat representations do not do justice to the area’s stunning coastline, windswept dunes, flourishing heaths, and serene lakes. Amid this enchanting backdrop, within the historic Thy National Park, Denmark’s oldest natural reserve, the iconic Danish design label Vipp has unveiled its latest venture: a bookable guesthouse, complementing its renowned properties such as the Vipp farmhouse in Lolland and the Vipp Villa in Puglia.

The architectural firm Hahn Lavsen has been entrusted with the design of a fishing-style cottage that embodies the principles of Scandinavian minimalism while also paying homage to the region’s rich fishing traditions. This area has recently transformed into a modern surfing hotspot dubbed Cold Hawaii. The guesthouse spans 155 square meters, its geometric shapes and restrained material choices contributing to a timeless aesthetic. Architects Caroline Hahn and Ebbe Lavsen state, “We used wood, bricks, glass, concrete, and stainless steel to create an honest and tactile experience, both visually and technically. What you see is what you get.”

“We made sure that the materials remained as raw and untreated as possible,” they continue. “It may seem simple, but if you look closely, you won’t find a distinction between the exterior and interior materials. For instance, the rendered walls maintain the same texture both inside and outside, carrying the same construction throughout.”

With its ability to reveal different facets of the region, the Cold Hawaii Guesthouse stands out as a distinct destination, whether it boasts a sun-soaked summer ambiance or braves the intensity of winter storms. The two-story dwelling accommodates up to eight guests, featuring three double bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a seamless living area that intertwines with the kitchen. Classic oak stable doors and expansive glass walls enhance the connection between indoors and the natural world, while exposed brick floors suggest a bold touch of brutalism, echoing the nearby sandy shores.

Though the house’s exterior projects a rugged charm commensurate with its materials, the interior—masterfully curated by designer Julie Cloos Mølsgaard—exudes elegance through craftsmanship. Prioritizing texture over color, Vipp furniture gracefully coexists alongside local artisanal pieces, vintage treasures, and selected artworks, each telling a tale of the region’s rich heritage. A standout feature of the guesthouse is the meticulously designed Vipp V3 kitchen, boasting six stainless steel units complemented by bespoke oak cabinetry. This culinary haven presents a curated seating area and sweeping views, while a stunning bush-hammered stone fireplace adds warmth and character.
