“A very big step”: Then came the so-called nitrogen hammer

A new agreement sets out the principles for how much nitrogen farmers are allowed to release onto their fields. The aim is to get farmers to set aside the most polluting fields.

How much nitrogen can farmers discharge into their fields in the coming years? That question has been hanging in the air since a political majority last year adopted the historic green tripartite agreement, which will lead to much more wild nature and, not least, a better marine environment.

On Thursday, the answer came in the form of a political agreement, which means that the total discharge of nitrogen to the fields will be reduced by 7,100 tons in 2027. This is a significant step forward in the ambition to ensure a better water environment around the country, says the Minister for Green Tripartite Affairs, Jeppe Bruus (S):
