Authorities have shut down 178 illegal gambling websites
178 blocked websites is the highest number of blocking cases since 2012, according to the Danish Gambling Authority.
The Danish Gambling Authority, which supervises gaming providers in Denmark, has blocked 178 illegal gaming websites.
The authority writes this in a press release.
This is the highest number of blocks made since 2012, it says.
The authority, which falls under the Ministry of Taxation, is tasked with ensuring a proper and regulated gambling market in Denmark.
The court in Frederiksberg on Thursday upheld the Danish Gambling Authority’s decision to block the 178 websites that offered illegal gambling to Danes.
For example, these are sites that have offered traditional casino games such as roulette, slot machines and poker, as well as betting.
Blocking of the pages takes place in court, which assesses whether they should be blocked.
It is illegal to offer games in Denmark or target the Danish market without a license from the Danish Gambling Authority.
According to the authority, a game is considered to be aimed at Denmark if a number of things are present, including the Danish language, Danish currency, Danish payment cards and Danish customer service.
It is not stated how many Danes have visited the 178 illegal pages in question.
The Danish Gambling Authority informs Ritzau that the majority of the websites are registered abroad.
The press release from the Danish Gambling Authority lists the 178 illegal sites. These include sites such as ‘jinxcasino.io’, ‘csgoempire.tv’ and ‘betbeast.com’.
Director of the Danish Gambling Authority Anders Dorph calls it ‘frustrating’ that illegal gambling sites targeting Danes continue to appear.
“But I am very pleased that we have tools to find the pages and that we have succeeded in blocking them,” he says in the press release.
The Danish Gambling Authority can block access to illegal websites with a so-called DNS block. This blocks the connection between the player and the gaming provider’s website at the telecommunications provider that the player uses.
If you try to access the site, you as a user will receive a message that the site is illegal and blocked by the authorities.
All gaming providers with a license to offer games in Denmark must use the Danish Gambling Authority’s license mark.
The label helps players understand which gaming providers have a license to offer games on the Danish market.
In total, the Danish Gambling Authority has blocked 616 illegal gambling sites since 2012, the authority writes.
